Barbara
King-Shaver
Dr. Barbara King-Shaver has
worked for more than thirty years as a classroom teacher, administrator,
and consultant. In addition to her employment in public and private
schools, Barbara taught for twenty-five years as an adjunct faculty
member at Rutgers University Graduate School of Education. She also
served as a trainer for the New Jersey State Department of Education,
and conducted professional development workshops for schools throughout
the country.
During her tenure as a supervisor in the South Brunswick, NJ schools,
Barbara led a department of 27 English teachers in rewriting their
entire core English curriculum 9-12 in the UbD model. She and a committee
also worked with Grant Wiggins to develop district-wide benchmark
assessments. The most notable of these are the ninth-grade authentic
performance assessment, as well as the process-based English exams
still used in grades 9-12.
Barbara has published articles and books on teaching and learning,
most recently When Text Meets Text: Helping High School Readers
Make Connections in Literature and Differentiated Instruction in the
English Classroom, co-authored with Alyce Hunter. Both books
are published by Heinemann Publishers. |
