Until recently, Judith M. Hilton, Ed.D. (Judy) was Visiting Professor of Secondary Education at the Metropolitan State College of Denver. At present, in addition to her status as Senior Consultant at Authentic Education, Judy serves on the Understanding by Design (UbD) cadre at the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD). Prior to her work in higher education and consulting, she served a teacher and administrator in the Cherry Creek School District in suburban Denver, CO. There she held both central office and building leadership positions including Director of Employment, Middle and High School Principal.
As a K-12 educator Judy has been know for her ability to produce school-wide results, using research-based initiatives such as UbD, Classroom Instruction that Works, Tools for Teaching, Building Academic Background Knowledge and Differentiation Instruction. Her focus has been to improve student performance by helping teachers use strategies and ideas that work. Judy is skilled in school reform issues such as site-based management, shared decision-making, curriculum audit, and supervision/evaluation.
At the college level, Judy has developed and implemented an Alternative Licensure program to recruit and train second-career professionals to become teachers. Since its inception, over 800 teachers have been licensed through the Teacher in Residence Program; with an 85% retention rate; and these teachers are successful and recognized as emerging teacher leaders. Judy’s work with mentor training has also been supported by grants from NCLB.
Judy earned an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Denver with cognates in leadership, higher education, and statistics. She also earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in counseling psychology. She has a strong desire to continue to serve the educational community using her education and experience.
