Julie
DesOrmeaux has consulted in several districts as well as two New York
regional BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services). She most
often works with teachers and administrators on the development of
standards-based curriculum, but has also provided professional development
in student-centered classroom assessment, best practices in mathematics
instruction, the newly revised New York State Mathematics standards,
and has assisted districts in the development of curriculum maps Julie
is currently preparing to conduct a multi-session cohort in Critical
Thinking Skills for Special Education teachers in another county,
to begin in the fall of 2005.
After thirty years of teaching secondary mathematics, Julie became
the Teacher Trainer in her district. Although that position was generally
designed to assist new teachers, gradually her work became more involved
with instructional strategies and curriculum design for veteran teachers;
in 2004 her job became that of K-12 Instructional Coach. In this position,
professional development is supported within the classroom setting.
As a member of the Understanding by Design Exchange Expert Review
Team, Julie has given feedback and guidance to unit designers on the
Exchange since the project’s inception. As a Fellow of the Center
for the Study of Expertise in Teaching and Learning (CSETL) with Dr.
Giselle O. Martin-Kniep, Julie has assisted in the development of
a Handbook for Strategies in Teaching Mathematics and has presented
a conference session on using Think-Alouds in the content areas; she
will present a session on the power of peer review (“What Are You
Talking About?”) at the New York State Middle Schools Association
state-level conference in October, 2005.
